Shiva as Nataraj, lord of the dance.  He won a dancing competition with his wife, golden Parvati,  by lifting his leg to take a ring from his ear and modesty forbade the lady should emulate this trick.

This story merely portrays in fond, homely terms the unrestrainable cosmic lord of the heavens and all creation, all destruction, as the spirit within the ultimate cosmic dance of the whirling planets, the whirling galaxies, the swirling nebulae and the whole bewildering universe.  A dance of the utmost delicacy and challenge.
